Syntax Flashcards
Deals with structures (‘How to form a sentence’)
Syntax
When the meaning of the word is unclear since it has multiple meanings, which can cause different interpretations
Lexical ambiguity\Semantic ambiguity
A phrase or sentence can be interpreted in more than way due to grammatical structure.
Structural ambiguity\syntactic ambiguity
They show that there are different levels in the analysis of sentence and phrases.
Tree diagrams
A subject can determine a subject, verb and object.
Phase structure rules
Grammar operates by generating a set of abstract deep structures, subsequently converting these underlying representations into by applying a set of transformational rules.
surface structure
It is the abstract syntactic representation of a sentence - an underlying level of structural organization which specifies all the factors governing the way the sentence should be interpreted.
deep structure
A lexical rule is in a form of syntactic rule used within many theories of natural language syntax. These rules alter the argument structures of lexical items.
Lexical rules
The standard theory of the generating of sentences. It is a top-down approach by creating sentences by using phrase structure rules and 3 branches from one node are possible.
Generative Syntax
It lies in the syntactic structure and can usually either mean that a PP refers either to an NP adjunction or a VP adjunction.
Ambiguity
is a single word, a part of a word, or a chain of words that forms the basic elements of a language’s lexicon (vocabulary)
