Word Processing Software
Computer application used primarily with text to create, edit and format documents.
Microsoft Word
A word processing software application to produce all sorts of documents.
Word Wrap
A feature that automatically moves words to the next line if they do not fit on the currents line
Templates
A predesigned file that incorporates formatting elements, such as theme and layouts, and may include content that can be modified.
Insertion Point
Blinking bar that indicates where text that you type next will appear.
Thesaurus
A tool used to quickly find a synonym (word with same meaning)
Insights
A pane that presents outside resources, such as images, definitions and other references
Header
An area with one or more lines of information at the top of each page.
Footer
Information that is displayed at the bottom of a documents page
Watermark
Text or graphics that display behind text
Symbol
A character or graphic not normally included on a keyboard.
Print Layout View
View that closely resembles the way the document will look when printed.
Draft View
View that shows a great deal of document space, but no margins, headers/footers, or other special features
Outline View
A structural view of the document that can be collapsed and expanded as necessary.
Web Layout View
View that displays how the document will look when posted to the internet.
Read Mode
View in which text reflows automatically between columns to make it easier to read.
Document Properties
Data elements that identify a document, such as author or comments.
Document Inspector
Checks for and removes certain hidden and personal information from a document
Formatting
The process of modifying text by changing font and paragraph characteristics
Font
A combination of typeface and type style
Live Preview
An Office feature that provides a preview of the results of a selection when you point to an option in a list or gallery. Using Live Preview, you can experiment with a setting before making a final choice.
Serif Font
A font that contains a thin line or extension at the top and bottom of the primary strokes on characters.
Sans Serif Font
A font that does NOT contain a thin line or extension at the top and bottom of the primary strokes on characters. (Sans=Without)
Left/Right Alignment
Begins text evenly on Left (right) margin with a ragged Right (left) edge
Justified Alignment
Spreads text evenly between left and right margins, so that text begins at the left margin and uniformly ends at the right margin.
Paragraph Spacing
The amount of space before or after a paragraph.
Line Spacing
A vertical spacing between lines of a paragraph.
Indent
A format that offsets data from its default alignment.
Hanging Indent
Aligns the first line of a paragraph at the left margin, indenting remaining lines of the paragraph.
Left/Right Indent
A setting that positions all text in a paragraph an equal distance from the left (*right) margin.
Tab Stop
A marker that specifies the position for aligning text in a column arrangement, often including dot leader.
Numbered List
Sequences items in a list by displaying a successive number beside each item
Style Sets
A combination of title, heading, and paragraph styles that can be used to format all of those elements in a document at one time
Document Theme
A set of coordinating fonts, colors, and special effects that gives a stylish and professional look
Section Break
An indicator that divides a document into parts, enabling different formatting in each section.
Style
A named collection of formatting characteristics that can be applied to text or paragraphs
Sizing Handle
A series of faint dots on the outside border of a selected object; enables the user to adjust the height and width of an object.
Live Layout
Feature that enables you to watch text flow around an object as you move it, so you can position the object exactly as you want it.
Alignment Guides
A horizontal or vertical green bar that appears as you move an object, assisting with aligning the object with text or with another object.
WordArt
A feature that modifies text to include special effects such as color, shadow, gradient, and 3-D appearance
Formula
A combination of cell references, operators, values, and/or functions used to perform a calculation
Function
A predefined computation that simplifies creating a complex calculation and produces a result based on ARGUMENTS.
Order of Operations
A rule that controls the sequence in which arithmetic operations are performed.
Range
A group of adjacent or contiguous cells in a worksheet.
Argument
A positional reference contained within parentheses in a function such as a cell reference or value, required to complete a function and produce output
Border Painter
A feature that enables you to choose border formatting and clock on any table border to apply the formatting
Caption
A descriptive title for a table
Table Styles
A named collection of color, font, and border designs that can be applied to a table
Table Alignment
The horizontal position of a table between the left and right margins
Order of Operations
A rule that controls the sequence in which arithmetic operations are performed (BEDMAS)
Range
A group of adjacent or continuous cells in a worksheet. A range can be adjacent cells in a column, row, or rectangular group of cells.
Argument
A positional reference contained within parentheses in a function such as a cell reference or value, required to complete a function and produce output
Border
A line that surrounds a paragraph, page, or a table or table element
Border Painter
A feature that enables you to choose border formatting and click on any table to apply the formatting
Shading
A background color that appears behind text in a paragraph, page or table element
