Woolwich Arsenal Fieldwork Flashcards
Woolwich arsenal - what was the enquiry question
How has the brownfield site at woolwich arsenal changed
Woolwich arsenal - why was Woolwich arsenal an appropriate location
It is very close to bexley, so it was easy to get to on the train.
It ties in with our urbanisation project as we can clearly observe how the land use has changed
Woolwich arsenal - risk assesment
Being hit by cars - keep to the pavements and dont cross main roads
Construction work - stay away from areas of construction to avoid any trip hazards / danger
People - stay in groups and dont talk to others
Woolwich arsenal - why is the enquiry question appropriaye

Challenges / opportunities in Lindin
Woolwich arsenal - quantitative data collection
We wanted to find out how land use changed over time
To do this we split a map into grids and used RICEPOTS in order to categorise what the land was being used for
Woolwich arsenal - what sampling did we use for a qualitative data collection
Systematic
Woolwich arsenal - advantages of a qualitative data collection method
We were able to calculate the percentage eachbuilding type took up
We could easily compare between the two years as the size of the map was the same
Woolwich arsenal - disadvantages of the qualitative data collection method
It was hard to tell the purpose on the old map, creating an inaccurate count
When looking at buildings, some had multiple purposes making it harder to categorise
Woolwich arsenal - primary qualitative data collection advantages and disadvantages
Modern day map
A’s:
Clearly displayed data
Simple key for categorising
D’s:
Some buildings were unclear
Took a lot of time looking at buildings
Location of some areas was confusing
Woolwich arsenal - secondary qualitative data collection advantages and disadvantages
1931 map
A’s
Faster to complete
Easy key for categorisation
D’s
Some boxes weren’t full squares, making their area less significant
Many boxes had multiple objects in them, it was hard to identify a specific land use
Woolwich arsenal - quantitative data collection
We found historical photos of buildings in Woolwich arsenal when they were used for weapons manufacturing.
We went back to the buildings today, and took photos of them
We compared the differences
Woolwich arsenal - quantitative data collection advantages
Gives a clear visual comparison
Woolwich arsenal - qualitative data collection disadvantages
Photos are limited to specific time
Land use may not be obvious
There may be insignificant change in the appearance of buildings
Woolwich arsenal - primary qulitative data collection, advantages and disadvantages
A’s
We were able to observe the buildings in person (given multiple perspectives)
Data was easy to collect
D’s
Time consuming
One image was off the site, and hard to photograph
Woolwich arsenal - secondary qualatative data collection, advantages and disadvantages
A’s
Photos already taken
Quick and cheap
D’s
Only one angle
Photos in black and white
Woolwich arsenal - qualatative data collection, sampling technique
Spatial sampling, we went to 10 specific buildings (good sample size)
Woolwich arsenal - how did we present our quantative data
On two separate pie charts
Woolwich arsenal - what are the advantages and disadvantages of using pie charts
A’s
Clearly presented
Easy to compare
D’s
Original values not shown
If the total isnt equal on both pie charts they can be misleading
Woolwich arsenal - what dis the pie charts show
In 1932 the land use was 41.8% manufacturing and 2.3% residential
In 2024 it was 0% industrial and 44.1% residential
Woolwich arsenal - data presentation for qualitative data
We placed the images side by side and analysed them, annotating the differences
Woolwich arsenal - data presentation for qualitative data advantages and disadvantages
A’s
Clear comparisons
Easy to do / quick
D’s
Depends on where you took the photo from
Data is subjective, and might not show how the land use has changed
Woolwich arsenal - what was the main difference shown by the qualitative data
There has been an increase in the trees and greenery around Woolwich arsenal, this could be to make it appear more pleasant to the majority of residents
The smallest change was the overall structure and design of the buildings
Woolwich arsenal - strengths of our methods
Data was easy to collect
We collected qualitative and quantitative data, giving a range of comparisons and different changes to analyse
Woolwich arsenal - limitations of methods
Hard to judge land use
1931 photos weren’t very clear
Woolwich arsenal - improvements of methods
Take an average of everyone’s quantitaive data to recieve a more accurate result of land use
Woolwich arsenal - strengths of the data collected
Easy to compare
Could see a clear change
Woolwich arsenal - limitations of data collected
Only used two data collection methods
Woolwich arsenal - improvements to data collection
Collect more data e.g data from a census
Woolwich arsenal - strengths of conculsion
Easy to make, and back up with evidence
Shows clear changes in woolwich arsenal
Woolwich arsenal - limitations of the conclusion
Only at a small scale area
Woolwich arsenal - improvements
Go to multiple cities or areas
