Its Found on the eastern coast bordering the Atlantic ocean
It is 23°N of the equator
What are the opportunities in rio
Health - free healthcare and over 87 hospitals, life expectancy is 5 years higher than the rest of Brazil
People living in favelas are unlikely able to access these
Education - 5 universities in the center and 95% of kids above 10 are literate. This provides education helping children become more successful
However 50% of those over 14 drop out
Job opportunities - 5 ports in rio and onky 9.8% are unemployed. Large lest steelworks in South America is located in the Sepetiba bay
Most of the jobs are low pay manual labour - if accidents happen they will just be fired

Favelas - 19% of the population live in slums. High amounts of overcrowding and no proper healthcare / sanitation
Disease - Diarrhea and Dengue are very common. 75% of favela residents run out of money from isolating (covid)
Water supply - 1/3 of water is list by illegal tapping. Droughts have increased as water is lost

A site and service scheme where the local authority have provided service land and services to build homes.
The overall quality of favelas is to be improved and leisure, as well health, facilities have been built

Cable car from Rio to Rocinha (favela) has been built reducing travel times to 16mins (was 2hrs)
Police pacifying unit installed to help keep crime down
Hillsides secured to prevent landslides / people are moved if necessary
Greater access to water supply and drainage systems added for better sanitation
What are the failures of the favela Bairro scheme
Extremely expensive budget of 1 billion USD - might not cover all favelas
Cable cars might not always work causing people to be hours late to their jobs - risk of being fired
Newly built houses arent always maintained
Residents lack skills to repair damage
