what trees are hardwoods usually from? and what are they like?
- broad leaf deciduous tree
- slow growing
- usually more expensive than softwood
name the 5 hardwoods?
oak, mahogany, beech, jelutong, basla
what are the properties of oak?
-Hard, tough, attractive grain, good weather resistance.
-Contains tannic acid which will corrode steel screws or fixings.
what are the properties of mahogany?
- Can contain interlocking grain making it more difficult to work
- Rich dark red colour.
what are the properties of beech?
Tough, close grained, hard, available in steamed (white colour) and un-steamed (pink tinge).
what are the properties of jelutong?
Fine texture, straight grain, easy to cut, sand and carve, can be brittle. White or straw coloured.
what are the properties of balsa?
Off white to pinkish colour, straight grain, low density, lightweight.
what are the uses of oak?
Furniture, flooring, boat building, cladding, interior and exterior joinery.
what are the uses of mahogany?
Indoor furniture, shop fittings and cabinets, veneers commonly used on manufactured boards.
what are the uses of beech?
Chairs, chopping boards, tools (mallets), steam bent laminated furniture, turned bowls.
what are the uses of jelutong?
Pattern and mould making, wood carvings.
what are the uses of balsa?
Model making, surfboard cores, model aircraft, model structures.
what is softwoods from etc?
Wood from coniferous trees.
• Generally, faster growing and less expensive than hardwoods.
what are the three softwoods?
pine/redwood, larch, cedar
what are the properties and used of redwood/pine?
properties: straight grain, knotty, can contain resinous knots.
uses: construction work, roofing beams and timber frame construction, interior joinery.
