polymers Flashcards
What are thermoplastics?
A material which can be repeatedly reheated and reshaped.
What are the properties/characteristics of acrylic (PMMA)?
and example?
Tough, hard, good chemical resistance, available in translucent and transparent.
Example: Car light casings, CNC laser cut items, lighting units, lighting covers and baths.
What are the properties/characteristics of low density polyethylene (LDPE)?
Very tough, good chemical resistance, weatherproof, available in translucent and transparent, low level of rigidity.
Example: Squeezy detergent bottles, toys, carrier bags, bin liners, general packaging, food wrap film, food trays.
What are the properties/characteristics of high density polyethylene (HDPE)?
Available in translucent and transparent, weatherproof, tough, good chemical resistance.
Example: Chemical drums, toys, household and kitchenware, long life carrier bags, buckets, bowls.
What are the properties/characteristics of polyethylene terephthalate (PET)?
Available in transparent form, hard, tough, good chemical resistance.
Example: Single use drinks bottles, food packaging, detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, food trays.
What are the properties/characteristics of flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC)?
Available in translucent and transparent, tough, flexible, good weathering resistance, good chemical resistance.
Example: Hose pipes, cable insulation, medical grade tubing, inflatable products, imitation leather, seat coverings.
What are the properties/characteristics of rigid polyvinyl chloride (uPVC)?
Rigid, opaque, tough, hard, good weathering resistance, good chemical resistance.
Example: Window frames, external doors, guttering and downpipes for buildings, water service pipes, bank cards.
What are the properties/characteristics of polypropylene (PP)?
Rope, folders, folio cases, food containers, medical equipment.
Example: Rope, folders, folio cases, food containers, medical equipment.
What are the properties/characteristics of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)?
Available in translucent and transparent, good chemical resistance, tough, good fatigue resistance (hinge property).
Example: Telephone handsets, rigid luggage, domestic appliance housings (food mixers), handles, computer housings, remote control casings.
whats a thermosetting plastic?
a material which when heated undergoes a chemical change whereby the molecules form rigid cross links
thermosetting polymers cannot be reheated and reshaped even at high temps
epoxy resin
thermosetting plastics
rigid clear hard tough chemical resistance
adhesives surface coatings
urea formaldehyde
thermosetting plastics
hard heat resistant good electrical insulator brittle
electrical fittings and adhesives
polyester resin
PR
thermosetting plastic
rigid, heat resistant, chemical resistant, brittle
castings, car parts and chair seats
what are elastomers
materials that at room temp can be deformed under pressure and then upon release of the pressure will return to their original shape
natural rubber
elastomer
high tensile strength, good hardness, tough, electrical insulator
automotive industry (tyres) balloons etc
