textiles Flashcards
natural fibres
either plant based, can be recycled, will biodegrade and naturally reoccur
types of natural fibres
cotton wool linenn
cotton
Good absorption, breathable, low elasticity, non allergenic, tendency to crease, no static client, hold up to 27 times its own weight in water
coloured and non coloured clothing
linen
good absorbency, can hold up to 20x its own weight, breathable, high durability, lightweight
bedding, clothing, cushions etc
wool
good thermal insulator, high breathability, good resistance to creasing, good absorption, some elasticity, good flame resistance, low durability
homewares such as rugs curtains carpets etc
manmade fibres
do not occur naturally, synthetic developed in lab situation
from polymers
nylon, polypropylene, polyester
nylon
doesn’t absorb water, very durable, good elasticity, good tear resistance, doesn’t crease, not very breathable, static electricity
clothing, carpets, sails
polypropylene
doesn’t absorb moisture, high durability, very lightweight, not very breathable
sporting, activewear, carpet
polyester
good elasticity, crease resistance, very durable, poor moisture absorption, quick drying
outwear, upholstery
textile treatments
to enhance properties, flame resistance and stain resistance
flame resistance - coated with a fire retardant stiffens the texture OR dipped in chemicals to create barrier which are activated by heat to trigger a chemical reaction to extinguish fire
stain resistance - treated with PTFE to make them resistant to spills, thin barrier created to easy to wipe
