Wood, Metals And Plastics Flashcards
Explain what are processed woods?
They come from factories.
They com in sheets of different sizes and thicknesses.
Has chemicals added to manipulate its properties.
It’s a way of recycling off-cuts.
Explain what are natural woods?
They come directly from trees.
They come in the shape of veneers.
Describe hardwoods?
High density. Expensive. Dark in color. Comes from warm regions. Eg. Ebony
Describe softwoods?
Less dense. Cheaper than hardwood. Light in color. Comes from cool regions. Eg. Pine
What do all carbon steels have?
A percentage of carbon and iron.
Explain low carbon steel.
A.K.A mild steel.
Very malleable.
Cheap.
Eg. Screws, wire etc…
Explain medium carbon steel?
Harder than LCS.
More malleable than HCS.
Eg. Hammerheads, springs etc…
Explain high carbon steel?
A.K.A tool steel.
Very hard and tough.
Difficult to produce.
Eg. Blades, files etc…
Explain thermoplastics against thermosets?
Thermoplastics heat up and eventually melt whereas thermosets burn into toxic fumes when exposed to high temperatures.
What are acrylic plastics?
They are transparent.
Available in different colours.
Surface can be scratched easily.
