What is a butt joint?
Simple (easy to cut)
Used for structures holding light weights
Generally used with glue and/or nails
What are the 6 kinds of wood joints?
1) Butt joint,
2) mitre joint,
3) rebate joint,
4) finger joint,
5) housing housing joint (through),
6) housing joint (stopped).
What is a Mitre joint?
A.K.A frame joint
Both parts should be cut at 45 degrees to form a right angle
Simple to cut with the right equipment
What is a rebate joint?
One part is simple to cut but the second is more complex.
A rebate joint provides more gluing surface thus a stronger bond is formed.
Simple to cut with the right equipment.
What is a finger joint?
There is a lot of gluing surfaces, thus a very strong bond.
Used for structures holding heavy weights.
Very complex joint.
Generally used with glue.
What is a Housing joint (through) and a Housing joint (stopped)?
Requires to cut grooves.
Used mostly for shelving units.
Complex joint.
Doesn’t require glue, nails or screws.
