Stains
-Wood stain soaks into wood- enhances colour and grain
-Wood stains dry a lot faster than oil based stains (versatile and last longer)
-PURPOSE- COLOUR WOOD
-Doesn’t act as protecting agent
-Cheaper than others
Oils
-PURPOSE- BRING OUT NATURAL WOOD APPEARANCE.
-Slower to dry than water based finishes- doesn’t penetrate the wood as deeply
-Less likely to produce overlap marks
-Range in price- generally more expensive than water based.
Polishes
-PURPOSE- ENHANCE BEAUTY OF THE WOOD BY- cleaning the surface finish–raises shine and giving the wood a deeper, richer look.
-EG. Beeswax, Silicone wax, French polish.
Synthetic Resin
-Give a much harder and tougher surface finish- heatproof and waterproof
-Capable of withstanding dents and scratches.
-Available in clear, translucent or coloured shades- gives high gloss, satin or matte finish
USED ON wooden floors and furniture
Veneers
-PURPOSE- MORE AFFORDABLE THAN SOLID TIMBER AS LESS ACTUAL WOOD IS USED, BUT THE BASE MATERIAL GIVES THE WHOLE THING OVERALL STABILITY.
-Aesthetically pleasing- good inside a home
Laminates
-PURPOSE- MAINTAINS A CONSTANT THICKNESS EVEN OVER TIME AND IN THE FACE OF CLIMATIC VARIATIONS.
