What are Manufactured Boards?
-Timber sheets- produced by gluing wood layers/ wood fibres together.
-Made from waste wood materials
-Range of sizes
Examples- Plywood, MDF, Hardboard, Chipboard
PLYWOOD
-Uses laminated veneers to produce large sheets.
-Can be made up of a number of layers resulting in variety of thicknesses.
BLOCKBOARD
-Lightweight- moved more easily
-Consists of strips of softwood glued side by side , then sandwiched by veneers
-Better than others- easy to work with.
CHIPBOARD
-Used when appearance and strength is less important than cost.
-manufactured by mixing wood particles or flaues together with a resin.
-Prone to expansion and discolouration- moisture
-Large companies like IKEA- provide furniture at a low cost by using materials- chipboard
Hardboard
-Cheaper than plywood
-made from wood fibres- extruded from chips and pulped wood waste.
-3 Types available- standard, medium and oil-tempered
-Only used for indoor applications as when outdoors- absorbs water.
MDF- medium density fibreboard
-Easily damaged by moisture
-Taues paint well and veneers work well.
-Produced by tiny particles or timber glued together- then compressed with a resin.
-Used in furniture and sometimes used in speaker enclosures.
