Q

GnRH is secreted from the hypothalamus. true or false?

A

true

17
Q

What are the key sex female hormones?

A
  • Progesterone

- Estrogen

18
Q

what produces HCG if pregnancy occurs?

A
  • Blastocyst
19
Q

What does HCG do?

A
  • It support continued release of progestetone during pregnancy by the corpus luteum until the placenta takes over
20
Q

what does progestrone do, during pregnancy?

A
  • It maintains uterine lining

- Impotant for the growth of blood vessels

21
Q

what occurs menopause?

A
  • when all fofflicles have been depleted

- decreases estrogen levels which inhibits LH and FSH release

22
Q

where is progesterone secreted from?

A

the copus luteum

23
Q

what are the three phases of the reproductive cycle?

A
  • Follicular
  • Late follicular/ovulation
  • Luteal phase
24
Q

What occurs in the follicular, late follicular/ ovulation and luteal phase?

A
  • Follicular:
  • FSH and LH released by pituitary in the brain
  • FSH causes follicles to develop and released
  • FSH also decreases levels of estradiol

Late/follicular/ovulation:

  • FSH stimulating one follicle
  • Inceased estradiol which leads to a surge in LH
  • Surge in LH stimulates ovulation
  • GnRH causes further spike in LH

Luteal phase:

  • High levels of LH leads to corpus luteum
  • Corpus luteum secretes progestetrone and estradiol which maintain lining of endometrium
  • This blocks secretion of GnRH from hypthalamus and FSH and LH from the pituitary
