What is obstetrics?
Deals with problems that arise in maternity care, treating any complications of pregnancy and childbirth and any that arise after the birth. Pregnancy and puerperium are key
What is gynaecology?
The care of women with problems of the female reproductive system (ovaries, tubes, womb, cervix, vagina). Fertility and conception are big parts of this
What are common problems in pregnancy?
Bleeding
Abdominal pain
Reduced or increased fetal movement
Hypertension or preeclampsia
What is gravidity?
Number of times a uterus has been pregnant, including current pregnancy
What is parity?
Number of babies she has given birth to at 24 weeks or later, born or alive. Superscript of other pregnancies up to 23 weeks (miscarriage, ectopic, TOP)
What are the hallmarks for pre-eclampsia?
- Raised BP (>140/90)
- Protein in urine
- Usually after 20 weeks, affects 6% of pregnancies
- Symptoms may also include, headache, visual disturbances, RUQ pain, oedema
What are the risks of pre-eclampsia?
- Risks for mother: stroke, seizures, liver or kidney damage
- Risks for foetus: growth restriction or death

- Home and environment

- Drugs
- Sexuality
- Suicide/Depression
- Social media presence
