Alice Paul and suffragette movement staged high profile protests during early 20’s. 1918 North Dakota, Ohio and Indiana gave state votes to women
Wilson came out in support
145 female representatives in state legislature and 5 in House of Representatives
Politics bad things
Women didn’t vote in block so it didn’t give them sway
1918 19th amendment failed to pass which would have granted equal voting rights (finally passed 1919)

Cultural divide-North was more progressive and liberal
South-more religious and old country values
