Dennis v United States
1951
In 1948 eleven communist party leaders were convicted of advocating the other throw of the US govt
This included Eugene Dennis
They used the trial to publicise the Communist party policies
The trial ran from March to October 1949 (the longest trial in US history)
The jury returned guilty verdicts ruling that Dennis et al did not have the right to exercise their right to free speech
Gouzenko affair
1945 a Russian Cipher clerk named Igor Gouzenko fled the Soviet Embassy in Ottowa with 109 documents proving the existence of a soviet spy ring in Canada
Said to have helped ignite the Cold War
Truman doctrine
1947
Was a policy of president truman’s which warned that the US would intervene to support any nation that was being threatened by a takeover by an armed minority
Under this doctrine 400m in military and economic aid to support the government of Greece in 1946 when communists attempted a takeover
Marshall plan
Channeller over 13b to finance the economic recovery of Europe between 1948+1951
Was seen to be a way of preventing the spread of communism as economic depression is a ground for communist uprising
The plan was seen by the USSR as an attempt to interfere in internal affairs of other states and refused to participate
National security act
1947
Mandated a major reorganisation of the foreign policy and military establishments of the US govt.
created the national security council
Also established the Central Intelligence Agency
