WMM Flashcards
How many objects can the Visuo-Spatial sketch pad hold?
3-4 objects
Name the two parts of the VSS and their functions
Visual cache- stores visual data
Inner scribe- records the arrangement of objects in visual field
What sort of coding is the phonological loop
Acoustic
Name the two stores of the phonological loop and their functions
Articulatory process (2 seconds of what you can say)- allows you to repeat words in your head and hold them in your working memory (maintained rehearsal) Phonological store-stores words you can hear
Function of the central executive?
Co-ordinates the activities of the 3 sub systems, allocates to the slave systems, limited capacity
Describe the episodic buffer
Added by baddely in 2000, draws info into one memory, in charge of time sequencing, links to the LTM
Describe the study of KF
- suffered brain damage
- had a poor STM for verbal information, but could process visual information fine.
- when read a list of digits his recall was poor but when read for himself his recall was normal
- supports the existence of two separate stores
Describe baddelys dual task performance
- found that subjects had more difficulty doing two visual tasks (tracking a light and describing the letter F) than doing a visual and a verbal task.
- this difficulty is because both visual tasks compete for the same slave system.
- supports the separate existence of the VSS
Weakness of WMM
There is a lack of clarity over the central executive despite it being bathe most important
-some psychologists believe it may consist of speedster components and so the WMM has not yet been fully explained
Brain scanning support of the WMM
Braver gave subjects tasks that involved the CE while scanning their brain. The scans showed greater activity in the left PREFRONTAL CORTEX. And as the tasks increased in difficulty the activity also increased
