MSM Flashcards
Introduce the MSM
Atkinson (1968) multi store model is a model suggesting how information flows through several stores, linked by processing
Describe the sensory register
- A stimulus from the environment into the either iconic memory(for visual info) or echoic memory (sound info coded acoustically)
- Duration is less than half a second
- only what you pay attention to will pass further into memory
Describe the WMM STM
- can only remember a certain number of things before forgetting takes place
- can hold around 7+/- 2 items
- coded acoustically
- lasts about 30 seconds unless rehearsed
Describe the WMM long term memory
-potentially permanent store for info that has been rehearsed enough
-capacity and duration are unlimited
Coded semantically
-when recalling has to be recalled back to the STM by a process called RETRIEVAL
Supporting evidence for WMM
Baddely found that we tend to mix up words that sound similar when using STM and that we me up words that are semantically Duffy when using LTM
- clearly shows coding in STM is acoustic and semantic in LTM
Evidence against WMM
The MSM states that the STM is a unitary store however Warrington study of KF shows STM has multiple parts
