What is retinitis pigmentosa?

A

Rare, inherited degenerative eye disease.
Causes severe vision impairment.
Sx often begin in childhood. They include decreased vision at night or in low light and loss of side vision (tunnel vision).
There’s no effective treatment for this condition. Wearing sunglasses may help protect remaining vision.

What are the 2 main categories of eye impairments?

A
  1. Visual acuity - distinguish shapes/objects at a distance
  2. Field of vision - entire area of vision when eyes are fixated on one spot

What is phosphenes?

A

when light hits retina, light disperses “firecracker”.
When eyes closed, images/light/colorus can still be seen
- can temporarily experience, when rubbing eyes

A

Indirect area that we can see when we are fixated on one spot.
