Wk1 Parts of Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
What is the cytoplasm of a prokaryotic cell?
“Cell formed” - All contents inside the cell/plasma membrane
What is the nucleoid region of a prokaryotic cell
Where DNA is located - Circular chromosome and plasmids
What are plasmids in prokaryotic cells?
Plasmids contain genes but are physically independent of cellular chromosome. The genes help cells adapt to unusual circumstances (ex: poison)
What are ribosomes?
Macromolecular machines that synthesize proteins from RNA
What is the cell wall of a prokaryotic cell?
A tough, fibrous layer that surrounds the plasma membrane -provides support and protection
What is the glycocalyx of a prokaryotic cell?
Traps water, gives protection, help evade immune system
What are the appendages of a prokaryotic cell and what do they do?
Pili (attachment)
Flagellum (movement)
What is inside the cell/plasma membrane of a prokaryotic cell?
Cytoplasm
Nucleoid Region
Ribosomes
What is outside the cell/plasma membrane of a prokaryotic cell?
Cell Wall
Glycocalyx
Appendages (pili and flagella)
