Wk 6 (PMP) Flashcards
What is Perceptional motor programs (PMP)
Combines movement abilities with academics
Engages children in movement activities that integrates perception and movement
Aims to develop a child’s perceptions and understanding of him/her self and his/her world through movement and motor experiences
Define perception
The ability to see hear or become aware of something through the senses
Definition movement
The act of process of moving changing position and posture
What does Perceptiinal motor program aim to develop through …
Spatial world
Temporal world
What type of things would you develop under Spatial world
Body awareness
Space awareness
Directional awareness
What type of things would you develop under Temporal World
Synchrony
Rhythm
Sequence
What does PMP look like
Children move around a sequence of experiences to develop perception and motor outcomes along with memory training
Under the direction of an adult groups of children move from one station to the next covering a number of skills and activities that will assist the child in thier early years of learning
What is some of the important features of PMP program
Eye tracking
Eye hand coordination
Eye foot coordination
Why is eye tracking important
Eye tracking assists student when learning to read ball skills etc
What is Perceptual Motor Development
Perceptual motor sensory motor processes and thier effect upon growth development and learning has been extensive studied
Based on the works of Piaget, Gessell Montessori
What do gross motor activities involve
Galloping walking
What do vestibular activities involve
Balance Coordination
What does Visual motor activities involve
Eye hand coordination
tying shoe laces
What auditory motor activities involve
Simon says games
Moving to the beat of music
Instructions
Whistle games
What does Tactile activities involve
Messy activities
Water play
Rice
What does body awareness involve
Recognising different parts of body
What does spatial awareness activity involve
Parachute game tunnel crawl
Why is eye hand coordination important
Important for writing and many sport related skills
Why is PMP and sensory motor process important
Brains need for sensory stimulation is required to function adequately
Important of sensory stimulation for development is well supported
Typical grow and development trends follows a sequence of events “The child passes through developmental stages through interaction with the environment. The environment provides the sensory stimulation to which the child adapts in order to grow and develop
What happens when sensory integration is inadequate
Can account for aspects of learning disorders
What types motor skills do children need to function effectively
Balance
locomotion
Eye/hand/ foot coordination
What do children with common behaviour problems of inattetion wandering laziness clumsiness disruptive behaviour are…..:
Frequently children who have not developed perceptual world. These are the children who become frustrated with school and optimal learning is not achieved
How can you recognise children who could benefit from PMP
Children who go unnoticed are those who try very hard with little success
Also look for children who
- poor muscle tone/posture
- have coordination problems
- display poor fine motor skills
- Display difficulty in expressing themselves
- have sensory input problems Have poor eye contact Have immature head movement development Have poor visual/ auditory memory Visual problems Number/letter reversal problems Poor comprehension Poor time concepts Midlife problems
What are some considerations for implementing PMP
Whole group Stations follow the leader Parent help Student leader Small group Stations in classroom Clear instructions Teacher modelling
How can PMP be successful
Linked to curriculum
Challenge student
Feedback
Making learning fun
What is perceptual motor development
Is a cognitive learning process used to assist children
PMP are vehicle for children to learn through movement
Promote cognitive development positive self concept and positive socialisation
What is the age of students to learn PMP
Age 2-6 but could be used throughout if student needs to develop
