The SOUND - شِدّة و رخاوة و توسط

  • الشدّة * - sudden stopping of the sound, all qalqalah letters plus أ and ك

– أَجِدْ قِطٌّ بَكَتْ - أ ج د ق ط ب ق ط

  • التوسط * - between stoppage and continuation, time and care should be given when pronouncing these letters.
  • لن عمر - ل ن ع م ر
  • رخاوة * continuation of the sound when pronounced (saakinah & non-saakinah) . The remaining letters contain this quality.

The AIR/ BREATH- همس و جهر

A
  • همس * - this is the quality of the continuation of the breath/air when pronouncing the letter (ESP as saakinah) -

فَحَثَّهُ شَخْصٌ سَكَتْ - ف ح ث ه ش خ ص س ك ت

Note that the letters ب and ك should not have this quality when pronounced non-saakinah

  • جهر * - all other letters have this quality of; discontinuation of the breath/air

The BACK OF TONGUE - الاستعلاء و الاستفال

  • الاستعلاء * - means elevation of the back of tongue towards the roof of mouth to project heaviness onto the letter.
    • خُصَّ ضَغْطٍ قِظْ - خ ص ض غ ط ق ظ
  • الاستفال * - lowering the tongue. All other letters

The FRONT OF TONGUE - الإطباق و الإنفتاح

  • الإطباق * - adhesion of the front part of tongue towards the roof of the mouth.
    • ص ض ط ظ –
  • الإنفتاح * - means opening or keeping the tongue separated from roof of mouth. - all remaining letters contain this quality-

The MAKHRAJ/ FLUENCY of letter - الإذلاق و الإصمات

A
  • الإذلاق * - means fluency. meaning these letters have an ease and quickness when pronouncing them , therefore time and care must be given when pronouncing these letters:
  • فُرَّ مِنْ لُبّ - ف ر م ن ل ب
  • الإصمات * these letters are more difficult to articulate , as their Makhraj points are more stronger and stable. All the remaining letters have this quality.
