How does wifi work
1) the router is connected to the internet by a high speed broadband connection
2) the router receives data from the internet
3) it transmits the data as a radio signal using an antenna.
4) the computers wireless adapter picks up the signal and turns the radio signal into data that the computer can understand.
What do you need to set up a small wifi network
1) a broadband connection to the internet
2) a router
3) wifi enabled computers
Advantages of wireless networks 4
1) allows inexpensive LANS to be setup without cables
2) allows people the freedom of working working anywhere where a signal can be received.
3) ideal networks in old listed buildings where cables would not be allowed to be installed
4) global set of standards. - you can use wifi all over the world.
EXTRA BUT NOT IN TEXTBOOK:
1) can use a variety of devices - tablets, mobiles etc
2) health and safety - tidier desktop with no trailing cables
5 disadvantages of wireless networks
1) power consumption is high - which means laptops soon exhaust their rechargeable batteries
2) there may be health problems in using wifi
3) there may be security problems even when encryption is used
4) home networks have a very limited range
5) can get interference if wireless network signals start to overlap
