Networking Software Flashcards
Name 4 ways in which software can help with security strategy
1) Use of passwords and user-IDs - used to authenticate a user of a network. Ensures that access is restricted to authorised users
2) virus checkers - all computers have the latest virus checking software loaded which scans the computer and all files, emails and instant messages for viruses. If viruses are detected they can be removed automatically.
3) firewalls - can be software hardware or both to protect from hackers
4) encryption - used to keep data secret when being sent over networks. Used for financial detail wen sending over the internet.
What are 7 tasks the network manager software would help with
1) making sure that all the computers have up to date software with the latest security patches so hacker cannot get into the network.
2) checking that all pieces of software has licenses for them to be used.
3) keeping all application software up to date
4) providing remote control facilities so that help-desk staff can sort out a users computer problem by seeing exactly what’s on the users screen
5) check the bandwidth is being used correctly
6) find out if a user has installed a piece of software without a license or permission.
7) check the speed of the processor and the memory used for a particular computer in the network.
What is network configuration management
It is the process of organising and maintaining all the information about the network.
What are 6 advantages Of using configuration management software
1) it is much easier to repair, expand or upgrade the network
2) the network will be optimised and so will run faster
3) there will be less network downtime owing to a better management of the network
4) network security will be optimised
5) it is possible to roll back changes to a previous configuration if changes made to a network adversely affect it’s performance
6) it keeps records of all the changes made to a network so you do not need to write down the new settings.
What can network managers use remote management to do (6)
1) see which users are using the network
2) check on emails sent during company time
3) check on internet sites visited by employees
4) check on the hardware to see if it needs upgrading
5) guide users through problems they may be having
6) shut down stations that are not functioning properly
What an the loss of hardware/software/data or communications be caused by?
1) hardware failure
2) software bugs
3) natural disasters
4) deliberate and/or accidental damage
Why is disaster planning needed?
1) to minimise the distribution caused
2) to get the systems working again in the shortest possible time
3) to ensure that all staff know what to do to recover data.
