Wired & Wireless Networks Flashcards
What are three types of transmission media?
Ethernet cables - fast and reliable connections typically used on LAN to transfer data between nodes and hardware. Ext Cat5e , Cat6
Coaxial cables - older, slower copper cables that have a plastic layer surrounding it to prevent interference.
Fibre optic cable - fast, expensive and fragile cables that transmit data as light they don’t suffer interference allowing them to transfer data along a WAN.
What are the effects of using Ethernet?(3)
Restricted movement(1) faster speed(1) prevents interception making it secure(1)
NIC required(1) expensive (1)
Name two wireless connection methods(2)
Wi-Fi(1) Bluetooth(1)
Name a wired mode of connection
Ethernet(1)
Compare Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
Bluetooth is shared connection between two devices and have a lower connection range and bandwidth compared to Wi-Fin.
Wi-Fi is multiple devices connected to a LAN at the same time. They have a larger range and higher bandwidth then Bluetooth. A WAP is needed to connect to Wi-Fi
How does a higher Bandwidth affect the performance of a Network
Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred in a given time. The greater the bandwidth the more data that can be transferred and the better the network can perform.
However this could cause congestion slowing down the network
