Wired and Wireless Networks Flashcards
What is a LAN?
Local Area Network - usually covers a relatively small geographical area.
What is a WAN?
Wide Area Network - is a collection of computers and networks through using cables, satellites etc.
Name some factors that affect the performance of networks?
- Bandwidth
- Latency
- Hardware
What is the role of a client (in a client-server setup)?
- The client sends requests to the server
- Waits for reply
- Receives reply
What is the role of a server?
- Wait for request
- Receive request
- The server may need to pass a request to another (it would then become the client)
- Sends data back to client
What is a Wireless Access Point?
Is a Wireless transmitter that receives data from a network, it will then transfer the data into radio waves which are transmitted.
What is a Routers and Switches?
Routers - Is designed to route data packets from node to node across a WAN.
Switches - A component of a LAN which knows the MAC address of each individual device connected in a LAN. And it will inbound packets only to the necessary user.
What is an NIC?
Network Interface Card - is required to connect to any network enabled device. It can operate wireless and wired.
What is transmission media?
A network cable used to physically connect the device to a network, usually an Ethernet cable.
What is the DNS?
It is a collection of servers which have all the domain names linked to the corresponding IP.
What are Advantages to the DNS system?
- Do not need to remember number addresses
2. If the IP address changes the Domain name does not.
What is the Cloud?
Includes saving personal data on an off-site storage, that can be accessed any time.
What are some advantages? (Cloud)
- Access data at any time
- Share data with other people across the globe
- Useful for backups.
What are some Disadvantages? (Cloud)
- Security - could be hacked data stolen
2. Dependent on internet connection
What is a Virtual Network?
Is a subset of computers connected together as part of a larger physical network.
