Network Typologies, Protocols and Layers Flashcards
What are some Advantages and Disadvantages to using Mesh network Topology?
ADVANTAGE
1. Robust System
DISADVANTAGE
2. Installation and configuration are difficult if the connectivity gets larger.
What are some Advantages and Disadvantages to using Star network Topology?
Advantage
1. Very Reliable, if one cable fails the others will continue working
Disadvantage
1. Extra devices required (expensive) e.g Switch/Hub
What is a protocol?
A set of rules that define how devices communicate.
What is Ethernet?
Ethernet refers to a family of networking rules or protocols widely used in LANs
What is a MAC address?
A 48 bit address written as twelve hex digits to make it easier for humans to work with.
How many MAC address can there be in a device?
Normally one for Wired and Wireless
Or Wireless and Bluetooth
Does a MAC address every change?
NO
What is an IP address?
Every networked computer or computing device in the world has a separate, unique IP address.
Can IP addresses change?
Yes
What is TCP/IP protocol?
Transmission Control Protocol - defines how messages are sent and how they are broken up into packets.
Internet Protocol - identifies the location of a device on the internet and routes individual packets from source.
What is HTTP and HTTPs?
HTTP - used for accessing and receiving web pages in the form of HTML.
HTTPs - encrypts the information so that it cannot be understood if hacked.
What is FTP?
File Transfer Protocol - Based on a client-server model uses separate control and data connections between the client and server.
What is POP?
Post Office Protocol - receives and holds emails for an individual until pick up (downloads the emails locally)
What is IMAP?
Internet Messaging Access Protocol
- stores email messages on a server but allows users to view and manipulate messages stored as if they were local.
What is SMTP?
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
- Used for sending emails between servers
