What is the main function of windows and external doors and what happens if they are not done properly
-Allow daylight into the property
-people can enter and leave the property (doors)
-provides sufficient ventilation
-prevents heat from escaping
-ensures security
if not done properly they could cause water penetration and heat loss or thermal gain.

Metal window frames started getting used instead of timber.
Metal window frame are thinner than timber.
what doors are in regular use?
Composite doors.
what has changed about windows and doors in the last 30 years?
they have been double glazed, triple glazed windows are now specified.
but new windows have to comply with the building regulations and be installed by a FENSA Installer
How is the wall above the window supported?
The wall above the window is supported using lintel. These are usually steel or lightweight concrete with cavity trays above - protect them from moisture and from moisture penetration to the inside wall.
Lintels are also used over the door opening.
