heating and hot water Flashcards

1
Q

what domestic heating and hot water was used in the past

A

extremely inefficient boilers e.g. free-standing, fires with back boilers and wall mounted boiler with cast iron heat exchanger.

heating systems - - some (solid fuel boiler by coil)

Q

What are modern systems

A

Radiators fitted with thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) (more efficient)- - may also be connected to a hot water storage vessel to provide indirect hot water to the sink and bath taps or shower and will be probably supplemented by secondary systems such as a gas fire or room heater.

Q

what are modern boilers?

A

Condensing type boiler - more efficent than tradational non-condensing boiler.
They have modern heat exchangers that recover more energy from the condensing vapour

Q

what 3 different types of boilers are there

A

Condensing boil is a generic term. They are three different types:
1. Condensing combi boiler
2. Conventional combi boiler
3. condensing system boiler

Q

what are the few systems that give energy efficiency rating

A

ERP (Energy related products) - every boiler in the UK has an ErP.
SEDBUK 2009

Q

What ERP (Energy related products) do currently installed boilers need to have?

A

energy effiency of 92% minimum using the ErP system.Which puts it in the ErP A catergory.

Q

Why do you think a 92% efficiency rating actually means in practice?

A

it means that 92% of the fuel would be used to heat up the home and 8% of it wasted.

Q

What’s SEDBUK 2009 and SEDBUK 2005

A

SEDBUK 2009 system gives each boiler an exact percentage score. The score gives a specific percentage rating for the boiler efficiency.

SEDBUK 2005 - This is featured on older boilers and is still used by lots of manufacturers. ERP system rates boilers for A-G.A rated boiler scores over 90% for efficiency, G rated boilers come under 70%.

Q

What is the Boiler Plus legislation?

A

Boiler plus legislation started in April 2018

it raised the minimum efficiency level of all gas boilers manufactured and installed in England to 92% ErP.

It stated that other energy efficiency measures must be taken such as

-Time and temperature controls are required for all gas and oil boiler installations

-Combi boiler installations must also include one of the following - weather compensation, load compensation, flue gas heat recovery and smart controls.

Q

What the future for fossil fuel boilers?

A

they are going to get banned soon. Their will be biomass boilers (fueled by wood pellets, made from wood chips, back and saw dust) and maybe hydrogen boiler using hydrogen from renewable electricity.

The only by product from a hydrogen boiler is water.

Helps with climate change.

Q

what happens once the boiler ban has been put in place?

A

new generation of homes will run on low carbon heat pumps and heat networks.

The carbon reduction scheme will install 2.5 million heat pumps by 2030
