A

He left soldiers in charge to make sure there were no rebellions in that area. His soldiers could ok after the area so he didn’t have to.

What was the domesday book?

A

The domesday book contained information about what everyone in the country owned and who they were what they had on their farm, how many chickens/sheep/cows they owned. It was a survey of everyone in the country.

Best way to control England and why?

A

Probably the feudal system as it didn’t harm anyone and made sure everyone knew their place. It helped the people become loyal and helped prevent rebellions. It didn’t always work though as he couldn’t put castles everywhere so there were still rebellions.

What was the feudal system?

A

The feudal system was when the King took money and knights from the baron and gave land to to them. The knights gave protection to the baron and military services. The peasants got land in return for free services, money and food. It organised society and helped William to stay in control.

A

A hierarchy was a the order of power you had:
(given knights and money from barons) King (gave land to barons)
(given money,food,service from knights) Barons (gave land to knights)

Did building castles solve any of Williams problems?

A

It did solve some of Williams problems because it meant that he could leave people he trusted in charge of an area so that there were no rebellions in that are. It gave him a place for his soldiers to live

What was the harrying of the north?

A

The harrying of the north was when William had had enough of all the rebellions so decided to go to the places that rebelled (York for example) and slaughter all the people and animals living there, he burnt the crops and houses so people couldn’t live there. he put salt on the ground so that people couldn’t grow crops for years to come.
