Because he moved the subject away from its philosophical roots to controlled scientific study.

To study the nature of human consciousness.
How did Wundt study human consciousness?
He developed a technique known as introspection.
How did Wundt explore introspection?
He trained psychology students to make observations about their experience when exposed to certain stimuli. He would then divide their observations into three categories: thoughts, images and sensations. In doing so, Wundt believed consciousness could be reduced into these basic elements. He did this by giving the students the same instructions and ensuring that they all experienced the same stimuli in the same way.
What is introspection?
The systematic analysis of your conscious experience of a stimulus.
