The Endocrine System (biopsychology) Flashcards
The endocrine system
The endocrine system is made up of glands which produce hormones. It works alongside the nervous system to control important bodily functions. These hormones travel through the body and affect cella that has a receptor site for that particular hormone. Each of the endocrine glands produce a different hormone.
Pituitary gland
Is the ’master gland’ as it monitors all other hormones and produces its own which cause other glands to release hormones when necessary.
Hypothalamus
Controls the pituitary gland and is also the link to the central nervous system.
Pineal gland
Converts serotonin into melatonin (in response to low light levels). This makes us feel sleepy and so regulates our sleep/wake cycle.
Thyroid glands
Produces the hormone thyroxin.
The pancreas
Regulates insulin levels and aids digestion by producing digestive enzymes.
Adrenal glands
Releases adrenaline and noradrenaline to trigger certain biological processes that deal with stressors during ’fight or flight’ mode.
Ovaries/testes
Are responsible for producing oestrogen/progesterone in the ovaries and testosterone in the testes. These regulate reproduction and cause sex differences.
