Ground, surface, and crown fires
Whats a ground fire?
burns in the layer of dead organic matter that covers the soil
whats a surface fire?
burns on the soil surface consuming low lying grass, shrubs
Whats a crown fire?
wind driven high intensity fires that move through the tree tops
What are the three types of ground cover fire fuels?
subsurface, surface, and aerial fuels
What weather conditions affect ground cover fires?
wind, temp., humidity, and precipitation
What topography affects ground cover fires?
Slope aspect, local terrain features, and drainages
whats the origin?
area where the fire started
whats the head?
usually opposite from origin, spreads most rapidly
whats the finger?
long narrow strips extending out from main fire
whats the perimeter?
boundary line of fire
whats the heel(rear)?
opposite of head, usually burns downhill or against wind
whats flanks?
sides of fire
whats islands?
patches of unburned areas inside the fire perimeter
whats spot fire?
small fire outside perimeter of main fire, cause by dying embers
