Wildfire key terms Flashcards
Wildfire
A large, uncontrolled inferno that quickly spreads through and burns wild landscapes
Ignition source
The source which can supply enough heat to spark a fire, can be either natural or human
Fuel
Components which can burn when exposed to a heat source, contributing to the size of the inferno
Retardants
Chemicals sprayed onto infernoes in order to slow them down, which are composed of nitrates, ammonia, phosphates, sulphates, and thickening agents
Pyrophytic vegetation
Plants adapted to tolerate fire, through having thick bark, high moisture content, or underground storage structures
Crown fires
Fires which burn from treetop to treetop, burning aerial fuel
Surface fires
Fires which burn along the ground using surface fuels
