Storm key terms Flashcards
Tropical storm
Intense low pressure weather systems that form in the tropics
Coriolis force
An effect where circulating air is deflected toward the right in the northern hemisphere or the left in the southern hemisphere
Convection
The movement caused by a fluid as hotter fluid rises and colder fluids sink due to gravity, resulting in the transfer of heat
Condensation
The conversion of a vapour or a gas into a liquid
Evaporation
The conversion of a liquid into a vapour or a gas
Hurricane
A tropical storm which forms in the Caribbean sea or the Gulf of Mexico, accounting for 11% of all tropical storms
Cyclone
A tropical storm which forms in the Arabian sea of the Bay of Bengal, accounting for 8% of all tropical storms
Typhoon
A tropical storm which forms in the western Pacific ocean, accounting for 33% of all tropical storms
Saffir-Simpson Scale
A scale which measures tropical storms based on wind speed
Storm surge
A rapid rise in sea level in which water is piled up against a coastline far in excess of the normal high tide conditions. They are produced during the passage in which high water levels combine with the ocean heaving upwards due to low pressure
