Smaller herds meant……

Smaller ranches were….
A lot easier to provide water easily during drought with better metal, WIND PUMPS!!!!
Smaller ranches were…..
Easier to guard so there was a reduced amount of rustling.
Smaller ranches meant….
HIGHER QUALITY MEAT!
Which led to higher prices and profit.
More HOMESTEADERS….
Took over cattle ranching as they could keep cattle on their small area of land. This gave more people an opportunity to make a living from cattle ranching.
Consequences of the end of the open range!
There was less demand for cowboys who had less adventurous lives. They stayed in one place and lived in the bunkhouse which was poor quality housing.
They had to put up with very strict rules all the time as they did not have their freedom of the cattle drive.
Much of their lives were spent riding the line just checking the ranch boundary in case of cattle rustlers or Indian attacks.
