Since the Indian removal act of 1830 using reservations had been a policy of the American government towards the plains Indians. Despite making several agreements that Indian territory would be protected over time, the us government gave in to pressure from the white settlers and opened up even more land in the American West.

The land on a reservation
Indian reservations were often located on the land least wanted by the whites this meant poor soil and lack of water.
Indian agents
The American government appointed Indian reservation agents to look after the food and equipment rations, but these Indians became greedy and were often corrupt and taking a bigger shame for themselves.
Resources
Rations were poor and crops often failed due to the Indians lack of experience with farming and this led to starvation.
Tribal chiefs lost power
The government removed the legal right for chiefs of a tribe to decide what to do.
In the 1880’s the chief was no longer in charge of a reservation.
In 1885 all Indians were under the control of the American national court system rather than their own tribes council.
White Armericans Values
Indian children wee sent to school where they were punished for using their own language and culture.
They were taught to assimilate to the American ways.
Their image had to be changed with their hair cut and had to wear clothes of the white Americans.
Indians were de skilled
Without their traditional lifestyle they lost their hunting riding, fighting skills and used equipment.
They found it hard to learn new skills such as farming.
