Why did Scots leave ?

- technology had developed and increased which led to a reduced demand for workers
- subtenencies halted + subdivision of land = prevented = couldn’t own land
- single/married farmhands lived on farms + loss of job = loss of home
- shortage of farm cottages for farm hands
- many couldn’t find work = had to look elsewhere
- jobs in cities/towns = 50% wage increase
- craftsmen couldn’t cope against factories
- people didn’t want to work on farms
- people didn’t like the isolation of the country
- people expected better from life due to education
