Why were the Jews treated better than other immigrants ?
A
Jewish people created their own businesses and so weren’t in direct competition with Scottish workers

Why did the Jews have their own systems for dealing with the poor ?
A
there would have been much prejudice and beliefs that they were going to ‘steal’ the poor relief funds from Scots and they knew this - they didn’t want to be seen as thiefs and so decided to look after their own
this helped strengthen their communities
