Why is water important to life? Flashcards
Important Properties of Water
There are 7
Liquid over most
temperatures on Earth
Good solvent
Adhesive
Cohesive
High Surface Tension
High Specific Heat
Less Dense when frozen
Molecular Structure of Water
Two hydrogen atoms bond with one oxygen atom
Use Polar Covalent Bonds
Oxygen Partial Negative
Hydrogens Partial Negative
How is Acid rain formed?
Pollutants from factories are released in the air and reacts with water to form acid rain
Electronic Structure
Oxygen atom shares electrons with the two hydrogen atoms
Oxygen’s outer shell has 6 electrons
The bonds formed with the hydrogen fills the outer shell of both oxygen and hydrogen
Melting Point/Boiling Point
Melting Point - 0℃/ Boiling Point - 100℃
Chemical Properties
What is special about water?
Both a Base and an Acid
Ocean Acidification
It’s when the CO2 is absorbed by the ocean and the PH is lowered. This causes fish and coral to die.
Why is the fact that ice is less dense
than water so important?
If water wasn’t less dense than water then glaciers wouldn’t exist. When Ice freezes on lakes it protects animal
