During hot weather and drought, the nutrient water produces dense growth of organisms like algae and cyanobacteria

When the algae die, a bunch of oxygen consuming bacteria decomposes the alge so the oxygen at the surface layer is taken away, killing aquatic animals

This can also create a gaseous product that smells bad, highly toxic, and flammable
