Why Do We Perceive lecture 1 Flashcards
What 3 features would help it survive
Proprioception- is the tail moving? Sense of relative position of body parts and the effort they are employing into the movement
Vestibular organs- inner ear, tells brain when it is moving
Vision/Olfaction/audition- where am I going? What’s there?
What are the 3 crucial parts of not being eaten
Find food
Avoid predators
Find a mate
What did they find with the Capuchin Monkey
Use cognitive apparatus in order to break shell of a nut
Finding a suitable rock to break it
Can take up to 8 years to gain this skill, similar to skills human children have to learn when interacting
What did they find with the Crabeater Seal
It uses locomotor steering and collision to avoid being attacked by a killer whale
Steer closely around the ice
Killer whales are more successful hunting other types of seal because they don’t use biomechanics to get ahead
What is light energy in our visual system
We see very little of the light wavelength, we have evolved only to detect certain ones
Light is useful for the daytime because it bounces off surfaces
It travels slower than sound because there is no external source
What is sound energy in our sound system
To use sound you have to create your own
Bats moving at night echolate to pick up each others sound
Dolphins also do this in the water to communicate and find food
Sound travels further and faster through water, it changes speed as the density of the medium changes
Why can our brains fall for illusion
When info is sparse our perception is warped
Our brain estimates and fills in the gaps to provide a tricked visual effect
Because we have evolved to rapidly select info from a scene to carry out actions so the brain can easily be tricked
It requires selective sampling and filtering visual info
What are some reasons perception and action are important
Humans with impairments (stroke) and it’s not clear how best to assess them for rehabilitation
Help them make movements their own again, and retain eye movements
Help children with poor motor skills aiding their learning and training them to improve
What did they find with the sea squirt?
It digests its brain when it attaches to the rock because it does not need it anymore
Without movement we don’t require a brain, we wouldn’t need these muscles
Without action we don’t need cognition either, it enables us to interact
