Capacity Of Visual Processing And Its Limits 9 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the time limit

A

Trying to identify two targets in RSVP of distracters that appear at the same location will be difficult- detecting the second target when it is presented within 500ms of the first target

Q

What is the attentional blink Raymond et all 1992

A

Two different kinds of attentional processed in order to report a target we need to look at each stimulus and identify the target
1. Unlimited capacity process: monitors and identifies all the stimuli
2. Limited capacity process: comes into play when we explicitly process the stimuli
T1 more demanding if you use resources that you don’t have enough attention for to use again for T2

Q

What is repitition blindness

A

T2 is more difficult to detect when T1 and T2 are similar
Cat, cat
Cat, pig

Q

What is the psychological refractory period

A

When we select response for T1, the ability to select response for T2 is delayed by several hundred ms

Q

Number limit- how many stimuli do you see?

A

Small number identified fast and accurate
Large number slower
More difficult to estimate no. of stimuli when there is a large number: reaction time decreases
Small number: subitizing
Can nearly automatically, parellel, immediate process with limited capacity
Recognise very simple configuration
Fast non-verbal mode of counting

Q

How many stimuli can you hold in your memory?

A

Limited memory, so look at a small part of the scene if we see no change we move onto the next part
Change blindness: difficult to detect change in 2 scenes, because amount of visual info stored in STM is very limited
Focus on what we think is important (door study)

Q

How many stimuli can you track simultaneously?

A

Paradigm: multiple object tracking task MOT

Q

What is visual integration

A

P’s are asked to remember just colours you can remember more, then if asked both colour and orientation you can also remember, stays the same because we can integrate features into objects

Q

What are two major limitations of visual processing

A
  1. The time to consciously identify a stimulus: Rapid Serial visual presentation (RSVP)
  2. The number of stimuli that can be processed at once: visual enumeration/ change detection/ multiple object tracking (MOT)
