Driving 5 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the information available for controlling steering

A

Surface cues in world are made up of textures

Optic flow- gives information on speed, arises from relative move, don’t of points on surface

Q

What causes car sicknesses

A

Vestibular system can tell you might be moving, optic flow also tells, these two in conflict

Q

What did Gibson 1958 suggest

A

Optic flow is a key component

Interaction with world emerges by moving through the world

Q

What Gibsons Ecological approach

A

Simple informational variables that do not require extensive processing or memory

Q

What are some problems with optic flow

A
  1. Eye movements alter it, the brain has to process retinal flow and this can cause a problem
  2. Visual direction of steering target can be used to steer
    - prism glasses in front of eye can shift where target appears, people walk toward where target is shifted unit they get close enough and it changes back (curved pattern)

Q

What did land and lee 1994 find about tangent point

A

Tangent point (inside of bend) found useful information in steering separate from optic flow
80% time looking at tangent point before entry to bend
Causes gaze angle info to indicate the future curvature of the road
Steering wheel held at angle proportional to gaze angle will steer you round the bend

Q

What were the problems with land and lees experiment

A

Evidence from 3 p’s
Evidence from one unique road, one way, no traffic
Unclear what trajectory drivers took

Q

What is driving an example of

A

Every day locomotion- steering ourselves through obstacles, a course, obtaining a particular goal
Visual motor control of steering, braking, ensuring speed and direction are correct

Q

What did they find in Leeds for steering in controlled conditions

A

Real world: cannot control speed, road, pedestrians so in lab have repeatable conditions to see where p’s steering and looking
Found they spent most time looking in middle of road, towards points they wanted to turn to
