What was the rat park experiment?
Rats were put into a small cage with no stimulation and were freely given two bottles. One with pure water and one with morphine. The rats in that environment drank the morphine water until they died. Another version of the experiment was done where the rats lived in a “rat park” where they also had to option of both bottles but instead were given a large space with toys, running wheels, and male and female rats that could mate. The study showed that the rats consumed 19 times less morphine water than the original rats in the study.
