Q

Why do you want to do medicine?

A

**1. Right meniscus surgery and the process **

My first inkling to do medicine came from when I i tore my lateral meniscus when I was playing rugby for Harlequins rugby academy in secondary school. when this happened, the lead consultant on my case was very informed on knee injuries, describing the type of injury I had sustained and why it was important for me to have surgery. He was very honest and open about the treatment plan for me to return to playing sport. Furthermore, as he played sport to a high level himself when he was younger, he could empathise and relate to my issues as he had also been in my position before. I believe the traits he displayed over the course of my treatment were critical its success it gave me an opportunity to be honest and open with the consultant. Additionally, I felt I developed a relationship with the consultant, albeit short, which made me feel like I was in safe hands and it gave me a sense of hope to be able to continue doing something I loved, playing sports. The level of security and hope I felt through my treatment then, and also treatments after, is something I would definitely want to provide to other individuals across the UK, no matter what their goals may be.

2. PASSION FOR helping people and how that has developed with my love for SCIENCE in Medicine - Work Exp examples: clinical pharmacist, sports coaching

I’ve always loved helping people through various different mediums. During secondary school and sixth form, it was through sport, volunteering my time to sports coaching to younger players at secondary school.

Over time, as my passion for science and healthcare has developed I have been more and more compelled to experience aiding others in a healthcare setting, with medicine being a perfect way to do that. Work experience over the christmas break solidified this, as I was able to shadow a clinical pharmacist. Reflecting on this experience, I was glad I was able to undertake it gave me an opportunity to experience doctor-patient relationships from the outside looking in. It reinforced what I already knew about being honest and empathetic to a patient situation by letting me see it from the clinicians perspective, rather than from being the patient myself.

3. the opportunities medicine provides - **examples: - AI in healthcare, research e.g. skeletal muscle **
I believe medicine provides crossover into many fields that I am interested in, the most recent one being AI and coding. As someone who enjoys using and learning about technology, the recent rise of how AI is being incorporated in healthcare, in surgeries and research projects such as and research has peaked my interest. because of this, I have enrolled in a AI in healthcare
module at the university that essentially refines coding skills in python and highlights the physical and socio-economical impact of AI and its capabilities.
