Why are some countries more developed than others? Flashcards
What is a HIC
High Income Country (a developed country)
LIC
Low Income Country (a developing country)
NIC
Newly Industrialised Country
BRIC
Brazil, Russia, India, China – key emerging markets, fast growing developing countries.
What are the factors influencing a countries development?
The factors influencing a country’s development can be historical, environmental, industrial or linked to issues of debt.
Why are there different levels of development within countries
Very often government spending is centred on major cities, rather than rural areas. More highly skilled, and therefore highly paid jobs tend to be in urban, rather than rural areas
● Some LIC countries gain a lot of their wealth from tourism but this may be in very specific areas. Education is often the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, but in some regions of a country, even in HICs, emphasis may not be placed on education and the benefits this may bring in future in terms of getting skilled jobs etc.
