Etiology of whooping cough?
A
Organism Borditella pertussis or borditella parapertussis ( gram –ve coccobacilli)
Route of infection droplet infection usually <5 years
IP 1 to 2 weeks

A
Cause it’s a dangerous disease

CP of whooping cough?
A
- Catarrhal stage ( 1 to 2 wks)
- Paroxysmal stage ( 4 to 6 up to 10wks)
- Convalescence stage ( 1 to 2 wks)

A
Catarrhal stage

Complication of whooping cough?
A
- Convulsions (Brain damage, IcHge, tetany)
- Mechanical (severe cough complications)
- Malnutrition (anorexia vomiting faulty food restriction)
- Respiratory Activate aten TB focus, bronchiectasis , atelectasis…)

Prognosis of whooping cough?
A
Directly related to age highest mortility in infants <6months

Diagnosis of whooping cough?
A
- Clinical
- Nasopharyngeal swab (microscopic exa, PCR, culture of Regan Lowe Charcoal agar)
- Cbc (leukocytosis with ABSOLUTE LYMPHOCYTOSIS)

Ttt of whooping cough?
A
- Case
a. General ( isolation, rest, symptomatic, feeding)
b. antibiotic - Contacts
a. <2 yrs immunoglobulin
b. Antibiotic regardless of immunization state ± booster dose of DTaP - Prevention ( DPaT)

DD of whooping cough ?
A
From other causes of chronic cough
- Adenovirus infection
- Chlamydia trachomatous infection
- Bronchial asthma
- Foreign body inhalation
- Pulmonary TB
- Mycoplasma pneumonia
- Suppurative lung syndromes (cystic fibrosis, immunodeficiency)
