Who was dissatisfied with the 1832 Reform Act? Flashcards
GROUP:
- Working Class
WHY DISSATISFIED?
- W/C had a sense of betrayal - Whigs made no attempt to deny that the £10 qualification to vote in the boroughs was designed to exclude the lower classes from the vote
GROUP:
- Middle Class
WHY DISSATISFIED?
- No immediate influx of M/C MPs. Most M/C gentlemen simply couldn’t afford the cost of being a MP. MPs were not paid and election campaigns were expensive due to the high levels of corruption and bribery.
GROUP:
- House of Commons
WHY DISSATISFIED?
- The aristocracy and landowning classes continued to have a strong and influential role in affairs.
GROUP:
- House of Lords
WHY DISSATISFIED?
- House of Commons was strengthened. The Reform Crisis revealed the power of the Commons when backed by public opinion. Could overcome the opposition of the aristocracy and the monarchy.
- Abolition of nomination boroughs reduced the scope for exercising their influence in choosing representation in the House of Commons.
GROUP:
- Crown
WHY DISSATISFIED?
- Loss of rotten and pocket boroughs which had been a powerful source of royal patronage in the House of Commons. Reform crisis proved a Govt could now survive without the support of the Lords and Crown, but not without the support of the House of Commons.
