1785, custom receipts on imported goods were £648000 for the government.
Cities
Bristol, Liverpool and London were the main cities involved. Liverpool grew from 5,000 inhabitants to 78,000. Bristol from 20,000 to 64,000. This was the growth of ports to centres of international trade.

Private individuals
Planters from the colonies made huge fortunes and returned to Britain. They usually bought: -Vast country estates -Build large houses in London -Bought seats in Parliament -Lived in great luxury For example, William Beckford
Employment
Shipwrights, sailmakers, rope makers, provision merchants, dockers and sailors were all needed. Nearby towns also profited.
Iron forgers, gunsmiths, weavers, potters and glass makers all found new demands for their products.

Planters and traders invested in:

-Transport
For example, The Phoenix Insurance Company and Barclays Bank were founded with sugar and slavery profits.
John Gladstone invested profits from slave-worked plantations in a worldwide shipping and trading empire, like the Liverpool to Manchester railway.
Docks, warehouses, canals and railways were all built with profits from slavery.
