How did slaves sabotage their owners?
-working slowly and inefficiently
-break tools and let animals loose.
-took wheels off carriages
-horses became lame
-expensive clothes were ruined
-best china dishes were broken
Owners rarely recognised this as resistance
What more did slaves do to their owners?
- Pretend to be ill. Played deaf and dumb, and couldn’t understand English when they did not want to
- Act cheeky, making fun of owners
- Burnt cane fields, planters homes or poisoned owners.
Who were runaways?
Slaves that ran away from plantations in search of peace.
Who were Maroons?
They were runways slaves which lived in remote or tropical mountainous areas such as Jamaica.
They raided plantations in search of weapons, food, more slaves…
What was the Underground Railroad?
In the 19th century many slaves escaped to the free estates in the North and even to Canada.
Many were helped by the network of people and places.
These people included free Blacks and some Whites
